Ok…this one’s got some rough spots but it also has some fine moments. Here’s a little glimpse into our writing process. Nick finds a funky line, Bill and Kevin coalesce around it, then the horns find the key and start blurting out ideas. Keep an ear out for some of these horn lines in “The Morph.” Coming soon to a stage near you.

Rise & Shine

Our contribution to the RPM challenge is in! Rise & Shine is a-day-in-the-life-of concept album, that is, a-day-in-the-life-of Oobleck. Get up, go to work, get through the day, party like a rock-star and do it all over again the next day. All while keeping it funky. The album is an 90% improvised with a sneak peak at some new tunes that are in the infancy stages.

For those who don’t know, the RPM Challenge asks musicians to record an album in the month of February with either 10 songs or 35 minutes of previously unreleased material. Ours was recorded almost completely in one session, straight from the heads of the Oobleck crew.

This could also be the premier of the new effects set-up. The attempt at Radio Bean was… well, it was a kick ass acoustic set for the horns. Here’s a taste from our first practice of the year. If the sound gods are willing you can check it live on Friday.

Keep posted for a new round of dates including including our first trip to Connecticut for “Black Rock Rock’s Mardi Gras Party” on 2/9. Proceeds from the show are going to provide music lessons to K.E.Y.S. (Kids Empowered by Your Support), which provides music lessons to under-served students in Bridgeport, CT. It’s going to be a funky February….more alliteration. This post has an educational theme.

Did You Catch The Moroccan Funk?

Friday night was a good night for live music in the Capital Region. John Medeski sat in with the Moroccan funk group Club D’Elf at Club Helsinki in Hudson, Red Square hosted Timbre Coup and Pigeons Playing Ping-Pong, School Bus Yellow was at Dino BBQ in Troy, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy was throwing down the swing at the Troy Savings Band Music Hall. Every night should have options like this!
